App Smackdown: Handshake

My app that I chose is called the Handshake app. This app is designed for students in every university, it is a very versatile tool when trying to obtain a job, or an internship, or to just gain insight into a potential career a student may want to get involved in. Here at Stockton University, almost everyone is required to create an account and utilize it in their academic ventures. It helps us connect with potential employers, internship opportunities, even the army if we want. This app is truly what a student makes of it in terms of use
What is also very interesting about the Handshake app is it is looking for opportunities such as jobs and internships for you, and the jobs are posted specifically for us the students, and all employers are actively recruiting people from the school you are currently enrolled in. This feature is very useful because it will help students and employers find the right students, or employer, to help their company or help gain experience. Me personally I am always getting messages from the app from employers trying to recruit me for an internship program. I believe every student is also getting these messages from employers who want specific student's to be apart of their company and gain experience as well as help around.
Peer Messaging in Handshake – Handshake Help Centre
This app is very useful for students in universities looking for career opportunities and advancements. The more experience you gain the more qualified and likely you are to obtain the job you want in the career you want. To any employer experience is the main driving factor in the hiring process. Employers will most likely pick the person with more experience around the job than the person with less experience, regardless of how the two people do the job. It is always the safer bet to pick the person who knows more about what to do in situations where the person with less experience may be lost on what to do because it is so new to them. This app is perfect for college students in any university, who want to gain a leg up on the competition by gaining as much experience as they can. It is also just very good for career advancements and networking. Who knows you may end up loving the internship and end up working full time for the company. Handshake is what you make of it, as is any other app. Students with drive and ambition will find themselves thriving on the app, as opposed to students with not very much ambition will find themselves struggling to make use of it.

  1. I liked your presentation, because Handshake is an app I have heard of, but was not quite familiar with its features. I think your powerpoint in particular did a great job explaining its features and stating how Handshake can benefit college students. This seems like a great platform for students who are looking for internships or to start their career paths.

  2. Manny I liked how you gave that relatable yet realistic summary of handshake focused on college students planning ahead for their career goals. As a senior I can relate and understand the importance of setting yourself up socially and network wise so you do not have to go through the trouble of scrambling later when you have your first important interview.

  6. Hi Manny, this is actually my first time hearing about the handshake app. I didn't know most students have to create an account. However, I think it's interesting how useful of a tool it can be in and out of university. Being that it opens a gateway for students to have the ability to link with more opportunities in their career is beneficial for future jobs. I'm definitely going to be using this.

  7. Hey Manny, really found this presentation great because it was one of the hiring applications that focus more on college-age users and have the benefit of tying the Stockton email with the account. Though I haven't heard of the app before I really think it would be interesting to test out and see how it is different from Indeed with it's college age focus. I also like how it has engagement with potential employers so that even though you might not work there you still are able to get that connection where you normally might not in other hiring applications.

At the beginning of the years I attending the communications interest meeting and one of the speakers said she found her current job on handshake!

  14. Hi Manny, I am a frequent user of Handshake, and it has helped me score multiple interviews, and be aware of some jobs we had on campus that I didn't even know of. This was a great handshake because, although I am familiar with the cite, I was not aware of some specific tools that are accessible on this cite.
